Hey guys I just bought a non running (yet) 85 454 and the airbox is missing. I'm interested in doing pods but I see people saying get the bike running well first with the airbox but obviously that is not an option at this given time. Does anyone have any recommendations? I don't want to buy an airbox to get it running only to put pods on it immediately after.

You will have to go with the pods (54mm) & do a oil change. You may need to clean/rebuild carbs if the bike has been sitting. Also a valve check/adjustment before you start to tune.

Thank you so much Blaine. just from being on here one day i've already figured out you and eaglerider are the dudes to go to. From My understanding is that I have two option with the pods as far as tuning. And that's : 1. Replace the main jet, shim the needle and possibly cut the spring or 2.Stuff something in the filter, like a brillo pad or tape around the filter to restrict the air flow. Is it really that cut and dry with both options or is there more to it? I mainly only want them for looks. I just want the bike to be reliable.

Option 1 Is always the way to go.......It may take some trial & error Or you may hit the right combo right off the bat.

I got a bike like this too. It had pods and ran ok but low end was uneven. It was hard to start too and the noise from the pods was annoying.

Got an air box on eBay, now it will start gut won't go mor than 30mph and throttle is weird. Rejetted to stock, more of the same. Put pods back on ,runs better but hard to start. checked valves and cleaned carb...no change. Im getting annoyed at this point so I figure I need to accurately throttle the air just a little. I made outer covers out of soup cans and got some copper tube and make little velocity stacks that are about 15% larger than the ones on the air box and this is the result filter cover this seems to work really well and the cut can fits under the filters metal edge and is secured with a stretch and seal rubber tape to the pod can be changed or cleaned. The sound is half of the pod and the tone is nice. The pieces

I found that adding a 1/4 thick piece of felt cut like a donut against the inside back of the can and glued with contact cement knocks the carb noise to a tolerable level.
