So I purchased an '89 Kawasaki en450 or also called the 454 ltd and I've been having some issues with it. This is my first bike so bare with me, but I believe that my battery is not charging while the bike is running. I've been told to do a diode test on my stater and regulator rectifier. And I plan to but that is only one issue I'm having with the bike. Another is when I approach a stop light and downshift to first the bike will just shut off all together, it's not bogging out or jerking around it just dies.what could be causing that? Is it a loss of power somewhere or perhaps a vacume leak? I am expecting my service manual soon so maybe that could shed some light but if anyone has any pointers that I should try I would definitely appreciate it.

Welcome....Both of your problems sound like a charging issue......Check your regulator/rectifer first.......I can send you a link to download the manual if you wish.
