I'd guess yes for that cylinder but why won't the other fire? Try the starter fluid and see if you have any luck Cleaned the carbs, pretty sure they're squeaky clean now. They weren't very dirty to begin with. Diaphragms weren't torn, so they seemed to be good. Butterfly valves seem to operating fine. No deterioration of any of the metals. I checked the spark plugs, and the were covered in gas. I cleaned them off with a paper towel and I made sure there was no residue on them. I tried starting it, but no luck. I recorded that attempt and I will attach a video. Afterwards, I sprayed some starting fluid in it. It started, jumped in RPM's, then died again. Does this help narrow down the problem?

If the starter fluid got it to fire and especially jump in rpm I'd say it's definitely a fuel issue. Silly question but are the carbs full of fuel? If you have the vacuum style petcock it'll only let fuel flow while cranking and if they're bone dry after putting them back on I'm not sure how long it would take for them to fully fill.

Where abouts do you live? Put petcock on "Pri" for about 30 seconds for bowls to fill.....Be sure to switch back to "on".Also twisting throttle does nothing.....Just be sure choke "enricher" is on.You can crack the drains on bowls to ensure you have fuel.

The enrichment circuit could be faulty to I'm guessing. I've read about that happening on a forum for my Yamaha.

Second that idea draining the bowls for fuel and also check out the plug leads as they may be intermittent. A quick fix is to remove the connectors each end (screw out) and trim a quarter or half inch off the cable ends so you are screwing the connectors back into fresh wire. Double and triple check the killswitch is not closing somewhere along the way, might be worth removing and bypassing the switch until she gets going.

When I tried starting it, I put it on prime for about 5 seconds.. When I get home today, I'll try priming it for 30 seconds. When you say make sure the choke enricher is on, are you meaning I just make sure choke is on? Sorry, still learning haha. My floats just came in the mail today, so I'll pop those carbs off again and out them in and make sure the float heights is correct again. Also, I just remembered. My petcock was leaking, and I couldn't afford to but a new one. Instead, I got some rtv silicone and sealed all the way around it. I don't know if this pin-points anything, but can this effect the function of it?

Where abouts do you live? I live in the Sacramento area of California. Yeah, the carbs were full of fuel. Also, the petcock is vacuume style

Enrichener and choke are the same thing they just work differently. The sealant shouldn't affect anything as long as you're getting fuel which it sounds like you are. Did you take the Jets completely out when you cleaned the carbs? If not you need to do that. Blow cleaner and air through them make sure they're completely clear. Have you touched the idle knob since it last ran? It may be open or closed way to far. Check the throttle plates while the carbs are off make sure they're just closing. Make sure they're opening evenly use a stand of copper wire to measure. Put the wire in the main carb throttle plate and close it with the idle adjustment. LIGHTLY. Then slowly open while gently pulling the wire till it slides out. Don't touch the idle knob now. Go to carb 2 and do the same thing but use the synching screw this time. That's you're bench sync.

And duh, i never even asked, where are your pilot screws at? Lightly seat them and run them back out 2 full turns for starters. Just keep track of where they are right now, count the turns in and write it down

So after months of putting it off, and working odd hours, I have managed to get it running. More power than its ever had. New spark plugs, new air filters, valve adjustment, fresh oil change, etc. It's insanely what that can do.
But... I'm facing severe coolant leaks. I have a strong feeling that the seals are bad on the tubes that hold the valve cover down which you screw on. What's that part called?.. And is there anywhere I can get a replacement? I'm hesitant on using silicone as I don't want any debris in the engine.

Whatever they're called, I pulled them off and the orings are bad. Can this cause an issue like that? I'll replace them regardless.

So what was the final fix to get her going again?

I checked the valve adjustment, and piston 1's inlet valve sad too loose. I replaced the orings and the leaks are no more, completely gone.
But.. Now, everyone I give it gas, it starts to die. Here's a video

Or could it be that the engine wasn't warmed up enough? I have it up right now, and it's idling at 1k with the choke on

So, it was idling at around 1k rpms so I adjusted the idle screw just a wee bit. It died off, and now it won't start.

I drained the float bowls. It started up again, and died after about 5 minutes.. I'm in California and it's about 50 degrees outside... Pretty cold for a California boy lol

Mine dies out when i snap the throttle if it's not fully warmed up. If i roll it slowly it'll Rev up though. If it idled for a good 5 minutes before dying either your floats aren't refilling (check vacuum petcock if you have one) or maybe the coils are going bad? I know when they get hot they'll start acting up if they're on their way out. At least that's what happened on my dad's bike

Too much fuel could be a possibility also. If you're running way rich the plugs could be fouling out after a 5 minute idle. Check them to see if they're black

Also, 1k rpm with full choke sounds a little off. I know every bikes different but with full choke mine revs at about 2200 to 2500. I usually only give it 3/4 to start then half till its warm. You should be able to take it off choke after a couple minutes especially at 50 degrees or more.

What do you think the best thing I should do from here is?

|
|
Post by joe on Feb 17, 2017 5:44:39 GMT -6
Well if it wont start unless you drain the bowls then it dies after idling a few minutes I'm guessing your carbs are at fault. Sounds like you're dumping too much fuel into the engine. If i remember right you replaced one of the floats? You'll probably need to double check float height, make sure the needles are fully seating. Try lifting the front of the bike remove the air box and let it sit for a bit, see if you get any fuel running out the back of the carbs

I checked the carbs.. I think the butterfly valves are too tight? I took a video of them. Is the choke not working?

I opened them up.. I checked the diaphragms and they look fine.. Although those little orange things were seated incorrectly to the point where they were covering the little holes.. Both of them were like that. Can that cause an issue?
Not sure how to post pictures on here lol

Idled at about 1800 with the choke on.. Still a little low? It died off after about three minutes when the bike was warmed up. I couldn't start it again, but it hasn't been that easy to start since before it stopped running.. But it dying off.. Could it be fuel delivery/air fuel mixture?

Sounds like it may be starving for fuel....Your vent tube on the upper T is open?.
