I have just bought a 1989 454. I had the tank cleaned, petcock rebuilt, and the carbs rebuilt. The bike starts great idles perfect but if you touch the trottle it dies. I'm new to this bike and stumped. The mechanic said it reved up good, but he was using an auxiliary gas tank because mine was being cleaned at the time. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

The petcock on the 454 is vacumn operated....if there is no vacumn with the engine turning over or running, no fuel will flow. If you have the vacumn hose from the left carb(sitting on the bike)vacumn port connected to the vacumn port on the petcock, then the petcock has a problem....eithe the screen in the tank that is mounted to the petcock, is clogged up, or the indide of the petcock is at fault, and likely needs a rebuild kit (can be found on ebay). Do you have a manual? These are a much needed item, especially for those that are unfamiliar with the 454. Contact blaine here on the forum, and he will send you a PM with a download, or most good bike shops can get a Clymers manual...also available on ebay. make sure you have air filters installed...these engines will not run right or not at all without them.

I think I'm missing the vacuum hose. I have a fuel hose that is hooked up and another hose but it is too small to reach anything maybe an inch long. Is it supposed to be strait hose or am I missing something else. I will definitely be getting a manual. Thank for your response!

If it is on the upper "T" above the fuel "T" is must remain open. The vacuum from the left carb goes to the petcock....The vacuum on the right carb can be blocked off......If the airbox is disconnected the bike will not rev up.....Send me a message & i can send you the manual.

These bikes are super sensitive to intake regulation. Get some pod filters to clamp on and it will make a world of difference. Just be sure to feel around on the mixture ratio to fine tune it afterwards.

In most cases takes MUCH more tuning to get them to run right with pods......That being said bike won't rev without airbox in place.

Ok I bought a brand new fuel petcock and put on. Still starts and idles great. I will rev up to 3k then it seems like it is running out of gas and tries to die. If I let off the trottle it will keep running. So it will rev up once as long as I let it build up enough gas. So I'm thinking something in the carb?
