I may be just paranoid, but I feel like my engine is spinning way too fast at highway speeds. In top gear, at about 55-60mph, my motor is running at about 5-6k rpm.
Is this too high? It seems that way to me.

This engine is a high RPM engine, as it is basically, a Crotch Rocket (sport bike) style engine, and is designed by Kawasaki engineers to be that way. Most 4 stroke motorcycle engines (Honda Yamaha, etc are low RPM (4 to 6 thousand RPM)...this engine redlines at 9,500......the others would be blowing up at that much RPM.

Thanks for the info. What is your usual rpm when you are at highway speeds?

Mine is/was about the same, ....however, mine is no longer a 454. !994 EX500, competition cams, larger carbs, with 140 main jets....it is geared slightly different.

Mine was about 5200 RPM @ 55 MPH.

That was going to be my next question, actually. For those who have done the EX500 swap, is it an instantaneous increase in power? Or is it that the EX has more options for upgrades?

Stock 500 vs stock 454.....not a great increase....most would not really notice too much difference, and not really more options. of course some 454 parts are used to make the 500 run in a stock 454 chassis, to use a tach in the 500, the 454 cams with tach drive must be used. Competition cams are not easy to be found, so that is one reason mine is so different, and larger CFM late model Ninja carbs with big jets are another. You can put larger ninja carbs on the 454, which will make a difference.

Stock 454 to stock 500....no...unless other Performance things are done. The difference in the Vulcan 500 and Ninja 500, is the Ninja engine is tuned up, and perhaps a bit of gear change.

Well I was thinking this coming winter, and I live in Wisconsin so winter comes early and stays late, I wanted to pull my stock 454 motor and rebuild it. Lets say money is not an issue. But you can either start with a stock 454 already in the bike, or a maybe-refurbished motor from an Ex500, what would you do? If you want to take either engine to build up as much as you can, which way would you go?

Oh, and also the 454 is from an 85 with over 24k on thr dial. And it sat out in the snow for many winters before I rescued her.

Yes....the 500. In order to get the 599 to run in the 454 chassis, you will need to swap the 454 stator, flywheel and stator cover into the 500, and if you want to use the tach, the 454 cam with the tach drive and valve cover will need to be used.

Yea, I've read what I would need to do to swap it all over in the many posts that many can't seem to find when asking if it's possible. But thank you. Why would you choose the 500? Or, rather, why DID you choose the 500?

mostly just to see how much more power...there is more torque, and I got a great deal on the Vulcan 500. Turned out that I got even a better deal, when it was discovered that the engine was a Ninja engine with competition cams in it. The Vulcan and Ninja bikes were built more or less side by side in the same building, and there was a short period of time that the Vulcan side ran out of engines, so they just went over and "borrowed" some Ninja engines, and converted them to belt drive, and installed them in the Vulcans.....I was lucky to get one of those. Most new members never heard of KIT, The Great White Knight's custom show 454.....it had a one of a kind 2004 EX500R (the R indicates race) engine in it, built to his specs, by Kawasaki....I don't know all that was done to that engine, but it was far from a stock 500.
