So I bought an '86 LTD a couple days ago and started working on it right away. The battery is not the correct size but I'm using it for now to check what all I have power to. Have jumper cables running to battery and frame from a (not running) truck. I can turn the key to "on" and get the neutral light and oil light, but with any combination of things (clutch disengaged, kickstand up, etc.) it will not turn over when I press the start button. I checked with a 12v test pick and I'm getting power to the kill switch and the start button. I also had horn, blinkers, and headlight before I started testing. Do not have them now. Any help at all is very much appreciated.

Forgot to add; I can turn the motor over by jumping the solenoid. Cranks strong.

Yes. They look good, and my test pick lights up on both ends of the fuses and wires running to and from them. I blew one while removing the headlight/shroud, but replaced it and continued testing.

Also, the plug for the headlight was melted.

That would indicate a bad short at sometime. Wondering if you have a wire or wires burned in two. Does the wiring harness show signs of being "messed with", as in being chopped up in any way?? If so, it might be a good idea to check ebay for a good wiring harness.

Yes, PO chopped the rear of the frame to bob it and bring the taillight forward, along with all the wiring. Just rain into another issue while testing for compression. Had air blowing out of the side of the motor from a small hole between cooling fins. Is this normal??

I'm guessing from what I found on the forum that this is a weep hole for the spark plug? So is this hole supposed to let air through when turning the motor over? Wouldn't that affect compression?

That weep hole is to let any water around the spark plug drain...and no there should be no air coming from it, unless, as Blaine said, the spark plug is loose.

Gotcha. I had the spark plug out and putting my finger over the hole to get a rough idea of my compression. That explains a lot. Thanks guys. I'm going to look into a new harness and plugs after I get an actual compression gauge on it.

Anyone have an idea of what this is supposed to plug into? It's a loner here in my mass of wires and connectors.

I swear to god, this might seem too obvious and me too stupid, but when I first picked up my 85, I was having trouble with the actual plastic start button. It was sticking and it took me a lot of sparks jumping from the battery cables before I figured it out.

That's what I originally thought, but I put my circuit tester to the start button and it lights up only when I press the button, so I know everything is in working order there. Ordered a wiring harness, kickstand switch, and a manual. Hopefully I'll have it running by next weekend. 🤞

I'm also going to do a valve adjustment as soon as I get it running because I'm sure it's going to need it.. The PO obviously didn't know a wrench from a banana.

Do the valve job now, before you get it running.

Just got my new (used) wiring harness. While comparing everything before unplugging, I noticed the plastic bracket part of the ic ignitor is broken off, leaving a nice big open seam where it looks all corroded inside. Should I try to open it up and clean it, or should I replace it? Are there ignitors off of other bikes that will work? Because I can't find any for the 454.

Found one and ONLY one ignitor and bought it. Going to replace ignitor first, then wiring harness. Doing valve adjustment and tank cleaning/painting this week. Rebuilding carbs next week. Then if she fires up, we're on to seats, tires, fenders, and go-fast mods.

Got my ic ignitor in today. Plugged it up with the old wiring harness aaaand... Nothing. Going to swap out wiring harnesses this weekend. Blain, Eagle, could my problem be a faulty ignition switch or solenoid?? I've been reading different things on the forum for days but can't figure out exactly what it might be. Btw, should the solenoid click when pressing the start button? Because mine doesn't.
