Good evening everybody,
So I recently purchased an 85 454LTD (California originally) that hasn't run in at least six years not counting what I was able to make it do a week and a half ago. I knew I'd have to go over most of it, but it was a steal and I couldn't pass it up. So to date I've repaired and replaced a number of components mostly unrelated to the engine and carb. No problem, very simple stuff, (tires brakes, etc.). But what good is all that when it won't move under its own power?
Since I began working on it, I've had the carbs out probably 10 times, torn down 4 times, and each time cleaned, inspected, and reassembled to the best of my (admittedly lacking) knowledge. The assembly was stripped of all rubber and plastic (that I could find, and that which I could not find has since been replaced) and dipped them in some heavy duty solvent and cleaned again. Replaced the mixture screws and hardware, replaced the float valves, float bowl o-ring, and the o-rings on the cross tubes. The top vent tube is free and open, not kinked. I set the float bowl level to 17mm last night according to instructions found on this forum (measured from the gasket face to the highest point of the float). When the bowl was apart, I removed two (jets?) from their respective threaded tubes in each carb, and thoroughly cleaned with spray cleaner and a special brush and replaced. Enrichers were removed, cleaned, and replaced.
I keep attempting to start the engine, enricher on, and off, throttle at different settings, and I can't get it to want to fire. Earlier tonight I was able to get it to start and run for about a minute with the use of starting fluid (not much maybe a half-second burst right when I begin to start it) and if I kept it at full throttle. It didn't want to run though, and all it did was lope back and forth between approximately 2-3.5k rpms.
I really appreciate all the help I've had from this forum so far just by reading it, so thank you all!!
