So, my starter is gone. Bought a rebuild kit. By the book, I'm supposed to remove the tank and carbs to pull the starter out. Please tell me I really don't have to. Please?

No...But you got to remove the left side stator cover to have access to the starter clutch chain.Don't try to remove the flywheel without the proper puller ot you will ruin it. (18mm x 1.5)..Also the flywheel retaining bolt is L.H. thread.

Ok cool. I looked through the forum and saw the stator cover/flywheel removal stuff, but no mention about the tank and carbs besides what it says in the manual. Thanks sir. Any other tips?

I think thats about it....you may be get at the chain enough to get starter out & in without removing the flywheel.

Thank fella. Quick question without searching, are there any better flywheels out there than factory?

Thank fella. Quick question without searching, are there any better flywheels out there than factory? Yes...The newer one piece design......Just be careful if you get one for the 500 Vulcan/ninja that you need to mod the firing contact so it will work on the 454...

Forgive my idiocy, but what does that do exactly? Is it more durable? Does it perform better?

The epoxy on the older 3 piece design had a habit of loosing & the magnet fall off & break & the pieces go all through the engine ruining it it in most cases.......The one piece design eliminates that problem.

So, it's been a while. I had some crap happen and I've been out of the loop for a while.
But I pulled the starter yesterday. I bought a rebuild kit some time ago. I brought the starter into the house to do the rebuild, but when I took it apart, it all just sort of fell apart. Pieces of magnet and metal everywhere. But now, I dont know how to put it all back together. Does anybody have a walkthrough of a starter rebuild?

You need to remove the left side cover so you can see starter clutch & chain. It's likely off the sprocket.
