Hey guys i just picked up a 86 454 as a project and am hitting a wall, i could get it too start up but any throttle and it would die instantly, the intake box was cut up and not properly mounted to carbs i repaired and reassembles it all and also cleaned the float bowls while i was there. It started up a and i was able to give it gas on prime with out it dying for about 10 second then it shut down and wouldnt start again. while trying to start it back up it backfired and got the airbox on fire (i was usiing starting fluid spray in the airbox). i also noticed after i got it to actually rev up it started dumping gas on the ground which it never did before at idle, i couldnt tell where the gas was coming from. any ideas on how to aproach this?

Floats are sticking.....Carbs need to come off the bike & be dissembled & cleaned.

ok well this is getting interesting, i checked floats and the moved fine but i believe i have issues with jets so im going to rebuild but i just figured it would be wise to compression test it and i pulled 120 psi on the left cylinder and 60, then 30 psi on the right. I squirted some oil in the right and it shot to 150 then 180 psi. I dont know where to go from here so i could use some recomendations but i think this is going beyond the carbs now. the spark plug was black as heck and saturated i did the oil in the cylinder due to a recommendation from a friend but i dont remember what it meant if the psi rises or stays w

i wanted to post this update to help anyone else having similar problems. After i squirted oil in the cylinder it regained compression, i burned all the oil out and the compression held and the bike runs a drives fine now. My mate who owns north coast cycles in humboldt county california told me the rings were dry and puting the oil in them "re seated" the rings and now everything is suposedly fine not needing new rings. worked out well and was driving yesterday around town up to 50 mph havnt gone on the freeway yet but all seems to work out aside from issues with the vacuum petcock. runs fine in prime tho.

I would say you have a classic case of stood bike syndrome. that is where a bike has been left a while. the floats have stuck feeding fuel into the engine. this washes away the oil between the rings and compression is lost. this in turn make the bike hard to start and run and because it cannot run it wont replace the oil around the rings to restore the compression. squirt of oil down the bores is a good idea on a engine that's been left a while.
also you should never use starting fluid in a engine that will not start of it's own accord [it's ok for model aeroplanes though] banging in unregulated amounts of ether and naphthalene does it no good at all.
