I've been restoring an 88, and have come across an issue where it only starts on really hot days (without choke). The choke actually kills the bike, or prevents it from starting (the hot days were the test), and I'm suspecting the float levels are off after I had cleaned and rebuilt the carb.
I was wondering, what degree should the carb sit when adjusting float levels?

The bowl should be level The choke is very generous on these carbs and I can usually start the bike (in a cold wet climate) with no or very little choke. If that's your problem then its not really a problem!

I have read that before. Will the tube trick work on these (where you attach a tube to the drain, and match it to the gasket line)? Or would that cause a vacuum leak?
I have a feeling that the valves need adjustment, but I was hoping the carb would be the culprit here.

Update - if you are checking float height without fuel in the bowl the manual says to hold the carbs around 45 degrees so that the float tang just makes contact with the float needle without compressing it. Just came to do this myself and remembered what a PITA it is trying to hold that point of contact and measure at the same time, anyway the spec is 17mm (+-2mm).

and that carb in the photo is PWK/OKO not a CVK. if after you have set the floats you must do the wet test with the tube. assuming your carbs are CVK and not PWK the fuel level line [in the tube] should be on the mating line of the float bowl plus or minus 1MM.
and yes there a PITA to set properly. make sure they are both the same level.
