I just brought home a 1985 en450a that I'm buying from my sister. We didn't notice until we got home when we tried to shift it, that the shift lever drops all the way down when its down shifted. I called my sister and she said that was normal, that the linkage is like that and that most older bikes have this. She said she liked it that way and just got used to it, that she only ever dropped it down all the way once. I know I wont like it this way. Can the linkage be tightened up so the lever shifts normally?

100% but I'd get yourself a copy of the blue Kawasaki workshop manual first as there's a specific guide to adjusting the linkage.

No, that is not normal....it could be that the heim joints on the ends of the shifter rod are worn, and need replaced. holler at Blain,,he will send you a link to a manual, so you can learn all about your bike and how to do needed adjustments.
