Hey guys,
Been going through my newly purchased LTD 454 and just fornd that the front drive pulley has slop approx. .020'' on the shaft....seems excessive to me but is it normal? What wears more the shaft or the pulley? Worth changing or keep it as it is?
Please let me know...looking forward to getting the bike finally on the road....

Pulley wears not the shaft.......Pulley is aluminum.

Pull the pulley, clean it and shaft, get some heavy, thick axle grease and apply heavily to shaft and shaft spline inside pulley and re-install pully. wipe excess of...this will help extend life and take up some of the play. be on the lookout for a new pulley, or at least a very low mileage used one. be very careful with the belt adjustment, as a "too tight" belt adjustment is a big cause of the pulley to shaft wear on these bikes.

What they said. You will hear a constant knocking on the pulley when its time to replace and the belt should be slacker than you might think.

Thanks a lot for the info guys... Just put in an order for a new pulley at Partzilla...
The previous owner had assembled the rear wheel without the belt sprocket spacer...had a lot of bearing bind...no wonder.
I'll be replacing the front pulley, installing new bearings in the rear wheel and getting a used spacer....and should be good to go to the next step of the rebuild...
Also, had a lot of coolant leaks from the thermostat housing and in back of the pump gaskets....needless to say whoever worked on this 31k only bike had no idea how to...anything!

Happens too often....first thing a "new" owner should do, is get a manual, and sit down and read thru it, in order to learn about their bike.
