I just picked up a kawasaki 454 with half a parts bike for a reasonable price. It has an issue where ot wont rev over 3500 rpm. Ive cleaned the jets, Swapped coils, cleandd the air filters, changed the clamps, sealed all vacuum hoses. Now one night i left the carburetor upside down out of the bike, the next morning when i put it all back together it revved to redline 12k rpms. Ran like that for 5 minutes twice. Then i went to put it all together to ride it and it went back to the issue. I jist ordered a carb rebuild kit it wil be in tomorrow. I have seen multiple people with this issue but none have a solution posted. Anyone experience this and fix it? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

have you got a fuel filter on it. sounds like blocked jets or one of the very small passage ways is plugged. happened to me in the early days before I got clued up. bike ran crap jets were blocked cleaned them out reset the carbs. ran for 10 mins and did the same thing. turned out to be rust in the tank. every time I redid the carbs it ran a bit then re-blocked the jets. fitted a rail filter of a zzr600 [very fine mesh in comparison to the petcock filter] cleaned out the tank no more issues.

@bikerman. I rebuilt the carburetor. There were two pieces that i didnt have a spot for in my carb. And i have a backup carb as well neither had it. Replaced the stator, spark plus, rectifier, vacuum pump, nothing works. Fuel is also comong out of the left pipe. White smoke comes from the left cylinder. I have a spare engine im about to replace the head if nothing else works.

I removed the diaphragm from the petcock to make it flow freely with just an on or off setting.

I doubt it's anything so major as to require a engine change. but keyboard diagnostics are extremely difficult it takes time and detailed explanation of everything to get to the bottom of ongoing issues. sometimes you have to start with the basics fuel air and compression and work from there, work on the sherlock homes principal check everything eliminating possible issues one at a time. then whatever is left must be the issue.

those pieces are the fuel enrichment screws and are vital to the running of the carbs. order of fitment to the carb 1. screw. 2. spring. 3. flat washer. 4. rubber O ring.
if these are not in I am surprised the engine even starts.

They are on the bottom of the carbs....if not re adjusted t some point, they are covered with a smooth soft metal cover.

this should give you some idea where to look. as an aside if they still have the blanking plugs installed that were put there at the factory. it means they have never been off so never been adjusted and more importantly never had the pathways cleaned out

Ok, i installed them. Now it revs to 4k after i tuned them but they are almost loose at that point. Still basically unridable. It backfires as well so i think its still running rich
