I've got an '85 454 (California emissions model). It's all stock & runs fine. But I notice that the breather cover has a big hole on the top & according to what I read on this forum it looks like a hose should connect between it & the airbox.
However, on this CA model, the airbox has 2 hoses coming off of it. A small hose on right front goes down to a plastic cannister. A large hose on left front goes up & connects in to reed valves under valve covers. I'm guessing if it wasn't a CA model, that large hose would not be there...so a different hose could connect from airbox down to the breather cover.
So, my breather cover has a big hole in top. For all I know it's always been that way. Doesn't seem like much pressure comes out of that hole when running...but some does. Is that supposed to be left open on a CA model (seems stupid...although it is CA model!).
I'm ok with leaving it stock with all the emissions stuff (for now), but should I jam a piece of foam down the breather cover just to keep dirt & insects from falling in there? How was this supposed to be from the factory? Should something be connected there?

Go to an auto supply store....most have a small air filter that looks like a miniture version of the pod filters many of us use, and a short piece of rubber tubing. If you look thru the photo gallery, you should find a pic of someone's bike with it installed. Personaly, I would get rid of all that emissions control stuff..just a problem, most times.

Not sure one of these little air filters would fit without removing the airbox, but I did find a filter like you mentioned. I may still tear out all the PAIR stuff later but not now. Still would like to know what was originally there for the CA models like this one...or if it's been open for the last 35 years...

uk models do not have all the pipes ect. so they are not needed for the bike to work. the airbox at the bottom has small s shaped pipe conected to it that goes on the engine so we have no problems over here.
