Hello new 88 owner here. I picked the bike up about 2 months ago and managed to get it running but the temp gauge does not move. I'll let it warm up for 10+ minutes and still nothing. I have taken it for a short ride and the needle bounces a little bit but still not registering the temperature at all. I have flushed the system and nothing gnarly came out. I'm wondering what my next step should be? Replacing the thermostat or should I look at the water pump. Thanks.

Air pockets in a cooling system will give you all kinds of wonky problems, so first off make sure you have all the air out of your water jacket and radiator. Remove the fill cap off, then fill the radiator, and start the bike any air in the system should burp out of the fill hole and refill as necessary. You will end up with a burped cooling system, next check the sensor on the thermostat housing for corrosion(it is on the left side of the bike under the bulkhead cover) this is where the gauge gets its signal from, and confirm the ground at the thermostat. Once the cooling system is purged of air refill the overflow tank under the right side bulkhead to the correct level. If the cooling system is air free and your sensor is functioning properly you should get a read at the gauge.
One question for you, is your cooling fan cycling after your bike runs for a while?

temp sender bottom of radiator check next That is the control for the fan relay, the temp sensor is on the thermostat housing.

Thanks for the quick responses guys, that’s awesome I will flush the system again and try to get all the air bubbles out of the system and let you know how it goes. Also The fan has been turning on.

If the fan is cycling that means that either the sensor on the thermostat is corroded and not working, or it could be an issue with the gauge. If you still have the center stand you can put it up on that to level everything and open the radiator cap to burp it like I described before. Just be sure to fill the over flow tank, if you shut it off and let it cool without anything for it to suck coolant from it'll fill with air again. Also check the ground between the sensor body and the frame of the bike with an ohmmeter.

Have you had any luck with your gauge?
