Just bought a 1990 454 LTD, had to replace the belt immediately. Road for about a week, and now it won't start. The starter spins, but won't engage. Tried charging it up, just spins faster and still doesn't engage. Should I replace the starter? I just wanna get back on my bike!

Welcome. It is most likely the starter clutch that is faulty. The rollers get smooth and won't spin the engine over.

I think I'm going to take the whole piece over to Cycle Salvage tomorrow, and they said they should be able to see more specifically which part it is because I have no clue. Pulled the starter out and it was fine, but not sure how to pull out starter clutch. When it was running, it would bog out and die sometimes too...same reason or something else?

The starter clutch is bolted to, and behind the flywheel, and you need a proper puller to get the flywheel off without damaging it.They are hard to get & expensive.Your bogging out is something totally different,it sounds like a fuel issue. If the bike was sitting, some Sea Foam in the fuel will help clean things up.Good luck.Keep us informed of your progress.

Blaine means the starter clutch is sorta hard to find, and expensive. However....upon examination, if the "housing" of the starter clutch is not cracked or damaged in any way, u can go to a Kawasaki dealership, have them order the "rollers" and springs for a Vulcan 500 starter clutch (any year), and just replace those....much cheaper. ;D

Thanks for all the replies! As far as missing the (gear part), when I pulled the starter out it was fine, and the sprocket on the end is still making the chain go around, but not engaging? I guess it could be the starter clutch like most seem to agree, and I'm just hoping that it isn't an issue with the engine! The bogging out will have to be taken care of when she's running again. Thanks again for the help! I'll update more as I find out.

Sorry for the late reply, but got the bike running again! Ordered the puller, took off the housing, and it turns out the "One-way clutch assy sprocket" was the damaged part. Now the bike is running better than before, and hasn't bogged out lately. Need to put fresh oil...any particular oil I should use (or shouldn't, for that matter)? Also gonna throw some sea foam in the tank to clean it up a bit. Thanks again for the help!

Having the same problem. is that puller needed to remove the flywheel? And do i need to get the center bolt removed to take off the flywheel?
