Has anyone tried the air box mod? The one where you take the stock air box and filter out and replaced it with the aftermarket K&N type filters clamped to the carbs? If so did you have any issues tuning the air/fuel mixture afterwards?
Anyone have any ideas on this mod?

I do not reccomend K&N filters....they flow way too much air. I do recommend Emgo filters...they have always worked best for me and many, many others. Also, when converting to pod filters, remember the filter for the crankcase vent. Make sure your bike is running as perfect as u can get it before attempting any mods!

Thanks! I do agree with you on getting the bike running as close to perfectly as I can before any mods. Monday I am taking the carbs off and getting them cleaned up, flushing the coolant and possibly adjusting the valves. As far as the mods that's just my long term goals.

When searching thru the forum, u will find many posts concerning the pod filter mod....and the many problems different members have had when doing it. I do not understand the many problems, as I had no problems at all when I did mine about 6 or 7 years ago...no problems at all, with all types of exhaust systems, no jetting, no closing off part of the filters, absolutly stock carbs. I tell you this, as you can be confused by the many "trials & tribulations" some have had, and the attempts to make things work. Maybe I was just too dumb to expect problems, so things just "fell into place" for me.

Thanks for all your advice.. and I'm the one asking all the "dumb" questions here. I'm hoping that I have the same dumb luck as you eagle.

Just for the record, we on this forum say there are no dumb questions.....just those that are not asked. A person may think their question might be dumb...but if they dont ask the question, how are they supposed to learn?? And NONE of us ever get so smart that we cannot learn something!

I know you put a breather in the crankcase vent but what do you do with the vacuum tube?

I know you put a breather in the crankcase vent but what do you do with the vacuum tube? Depends which one you mean.if you mean the one on the "t" on the carb it must remain open.On mine I removed the hose and pointed the "t" down towards the ground.

I am talking about the one that goes from the front/bottom of the air box up to a vacuum control above the valve covers and below the gas tank. I guess it kind of looks like a "t"

I guess it kind of looks like a "t" Most remove it all together and block it off. There is a set of plates you can buy for the valve cover & plug the vacuum at the carbs. Here is a link for the "Block off plates". ltd454.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3229

Looks like a great mod! Besides getting rid of the clutter does it make the engine perform any better? Does it change how it runs?

If using K & N foam type, they are not recommended...too much airflow. I don't think the air filters are causing your problem. does the bike start easily, or is it hard to start? Valve adjustment???

Sounds like more of a dirty carb(s) issue, than air filter. We have always advised to have the bike running absolutely the best, before making any mods, especially, going to pod filters. getting these carbs and engine needs correct, with pod filters is often times a big headache, and best done by a pro with a dynometer. I lucked out many years ago, I guess, when I installed pod filters on my 90 454. I did nothing but remove the airbox and install the Emgo filters, and I ran just about every kind of exhaust system you can think of. Now, when I installed the EX 500 engine, I had to go to larger CFM carbs and larger main jets..due to the competition cams used.
