Ok so I thought bike just needed a new battery as the one that was in it when I bought it would turn all the lights on but would not turn the starter over. So I bought a new AGM battery and installed it only to have NOTHING turn on at all, checked all the fuses and grounds cant figure it out. Little help guys

Has the new battery got a charge on it. Been a while since I bought a new one but seems to me like I had to put it on a charger to get a baseline charge.

Thats right, the battery I just bought I had to charge for 8 hours before I could put it in service. Check it with a voltmeter. It should have at least 12.5 volts. anything less needs a charge. I would double check that your connections are tight. Did you check the main fuse?

Checked main fuse and connections are tight didn't not charge cause battery says it doesn't need it (no acid fill enclosed battery doesn't spill) and the previous owner had but a toggle switch on the radiator fan and I can connect those terminals to the battery and it runs fine.

what about the fuses on the front of the bike?....Has your battery cable possibly got a bad spot and not giving you a good ground?

I read this post last night and should have commented then; Ditto what the other guys said. Charge the battery. I've bought quite a few "new" batteries that were no good. Buying any "new" battery is always a gamble. You never know when it was made, how long it has sat without a charge, and retailers can always put a new date sticker on a 5-year-old battery. It can take as little as 3 months for a battery with no charge put to it, to be reduced to a voltage that is not good for it. Anything under 10.6 volts will do permanent damage to a battery. I have a retailer in my area that buys brand new batteries from the factory, and when he receives them, he puts em in a Maintainer loop until they are sold. Especially important since we buy a lot of deep-cycle batteries. It has to be expensive for the battery manufacturers to produce 100,000 units a year, to have 50,000 of them go bad before they ever reach a vehicle. Short of a low or dead battery, my only other guess would be a ground somewhere..... Good Luck! And keep us posted.

Thinking it might be ignition switch due to the fact that I get 12.6-13v everywhere I test even the horn and the front fuses

have you checked to make sure all the safety switches are engaged, neutral, kick stand, clutch???

Now you are thinking..I think...in the right direction..ignition switch. These tend to sometimes get dirty, break, etc, due to age, and often setting outside or stored. Work the key off & on a little and see if , at a certain spot, things work.

IT'S ALIVE!!! Sorta lol the lights turn on it was the darn main fuse I checked it before and it read 12v but whatever now I have electricity but I think the starter solenoid is bad cause when I hit the start button it makes a click sound nothing else any ideas?

Jump the seloniod posts....if the starter works, thats an indication that the selonoid is bad.

Yes,it will click if the battery is discharged.If this is the case,the lights will go out when you hit the starter button.To jump the solenoid,just cross the posts.You will not damage the solenoid by crossing it.

I don't know about the smoking wires. That may be from the way you were crossing the solenoid. Looked like you may have accidentally grounded it to the frame. Concerning the "nothing but a click" I think you may have a bad starter. That is exactly what mine was doing when I had to replace the starter. And it just went all of a sudden with no warning.

I would agree on both points.I think you touched ground when you were crossing the solenoid,making your wires smoke.I think that your starter is completely shot.If your starter is locked up,this would also cause your wires to get hot,and your fuses to blow.

I am going to agree with Blaine on this one. If your starter is seized it could cause your solenoid wires to overheat and smoke. So, STOP doing that Getting the starter out will be fun, but that's your most likely culprit.

pull the large black plastic slotted plug on the left side of engine and with a socket see if that engine will turn over by hand before you tackle that starter............

Hi I'm new to this forum, joined the other day because I just bought an 85 model 454 and have the exact same problem, I replaced the solenoid and still all I get is a click, I can clutch start the bike and it runs fine but planning on doing a 2500km trip with it in 2 weeks and thought it probably be a good idea to get the electric start working, if I were to replace the starter motor would I need anything other than a socket set and some spanners? Will check everything as said in the previous posts before buying a new starter, my first bike and love it, can't wait to get some real hours in the seat

SHES ALIVE!!! and runs AMAZING!! I took her out for a ride yesterday after getting the new starter installed and runs like a dream. I managed to remove and replace the starter without taking the carbs or anything off . You shouldn need anything, I didnt but I used the old gasket and its not leaking at all(the left side case cover. You will need: 8mm deep socket for the side case 10mm socket for the chain guide inside the case (I took it off and it makes the chain and sprocket easier to deal with) Your going to need to do an oil change since you have to drain the oil before hand. Here is a link to a oil filter cross reference chart helps to find the right filter for the bike. www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.htmlI use Mobile 1 filter and Castrol GTX 20W-50 motorcycle oil. The bike takes 3.5 quarts with a oil filter change.
