To put the self cancelling signals on the later models that do not have it, not only the speedo needs to be changed to the earlier model, but also the complete early model wireing harness must be used. The wireing harnesses are slightly different. They were not really trustworthy, as stated, but just not worth the expense and trouble, in my opinion.

I haven't noticed any issues with mine on my '86. Are they prone to failure?

It wouldn't be a big deal to me if mine stopped working. Whatever happened to the days of being aware enough to turn off your own signals??

I personally like "manual" canceling. However, as long as the self-canceling works, I don't have an issue with it.
What drives me nuts are the controls on my Harley. Whoever thought splitting the controls was a good idea is an IDIOT!

Whoever thought splitting the controls was a good idea is an IDIOT! I think it's a fantastic idea. I'd personally love to have split controls, but we got what we got. Another reason "the Motor Company" decided to go with this design was because they started installing hazard flashers, and pushing both buttons for flashers is easier than adding yet ANOTHER button on the controls. And it's just smart, left button to go left, right button to go right. Most people either hate or love the split signal controls. I personally love em. And a lot of people have fallen into buying a H@#ley because they get pressured into it, or teased into it; without doing the proper research. Or they are just ingrained that there is NO other brand. And a lot of people first bikes are H@#ley's. Having said that, the Motor Company HAS made their bikes a little more ergo-friendly, and better for the "average" or beginning rider. If you're learning to ride, the last thing you want to have to think about just after, or during a turn, is whether your turn signal is still on or not. Or searching the controls for the turn signal switch. Left button for left, right button for right; makes sense to me. My two cents worth....

My 86' still has the self cancel relay, and it works fine. Not sure if it is the original, but I would be willing to bet it is. I enjoy having it, mostly because I ride in the winter time and with heavy gloves on it is simply easier to only have to push/pull the signal button once, rather than twice, when changing lanes, etc.
That being said, yes I would do just fine without it. It's just a "nice to have" item in my opinion.
