When I bought my '87-- it was missing the air filter cap on both sides. Been riding it for a year with it just open-- no side covers either. It ran fine locally. Instead of trying to find replacement air filter caps-- do you think I should just remove the air box and go with installing pod filters? Just thought I'd ask the question before I just went ahead and did it. Was thinking it might be a better investment.

Pods (54mm) give you lots of room to remove the carbs easily.Just be perpaired to do some jetting on your carbs. Some members get lucky & don't have to do any.But most do.If needed you should do a valve adjustment before you began.(you have been running without filters? Real bad for the engine).

I have filters-- but I don't have the caps to the filters-- at least I think that's what it's called. Looks like there is the airbox and the filter sits in the airbox-- this is what I have. The airbox has a clamp that I assume holds a cap piece that may has a small tube that leads to the cap on the other side?-- this is what I am missing (according to the diagram that I saw). Can you tell me what the function of that cap actually is? The bike seemed to run fine. I did notice when I went in the freeway for the first time the other day that it started stuttering at above 65 mph-- just like it does when the bike is cold in the mornings. Looked at the radiator temp when this happened-- and it was only like a quarter of the way up. Seems like this is a separate issue, right? I didn't notice this before because I've only used the bike to commute on local streets and couldn't go above 60 mph-- or maybe I should have looked at the rpm's when it did this. Any ideas? Thanks!

Yep the caps hold the filters in place. The hoses just turn a inch or so,just to keep water out.It is normal for heat gauge to run about 1/4 way when out on the road.Closer to 1/2 when around town. With out the caps on there is nothing to keep your filters tight,& dirty air can get past them. The sputtering may be caused because of the caps missing allowing to much air into the air box.You need to get the caps in place to hold the filters tight.

Gotcha-- thanks for the information-- that's really helpful. If I try the pod filters, I won't need the caps, right? Is that a better investment? Should the question I should be asking if I am up to the task of resetting and doing a valve adjustment? Thanks again for talking me through this.

If you go with pod filters you get rid of the air box completely. If you are mechanically inclined the valve adjustment is pretty straight forward.Just a matter of taking your time & being careful your first time around.

Thanks, Blaine. Do we have a link on our site here that runs me through the valve adjustment?-- or might it be in my Clymer's manual?

Thanks, Blaine-- great help. Looks like the previous owner screwed the filter into the airbox to keep it secured-- but I guess if you're talking about even microscopic particles getting into the engine-- one screw is not enough. Hope I didn't already ruin the engine after driving it that way for a year now.

Blaine, do you have any links that can help changing to pod filters? I'm sure the install is pretty easy but where can I get them? What kind do I want? I'm not even sure what pod filters look like.

Yep 54mm is the proper size.It depends what the filter material is made from.If they are paper (most likely they are) than you can just dry clean them & replace them when you like. The one's I got are foam filter material & I can oil & reuse them over & over.Jets should only cost you a few bucks. To shim the needles you will need 3mm flat washers & you will want to cut 3 coils out of the slide springs.I would go uo a couple of jet sizes & shim the needles & try it.If you still have a hesitation, than cut the springs.

Thanks blaine, is there any links that you have about re-jetting carbs? And by going up a jet size what size do you mean? I have no clue in this area of the bike. I don't know what the jet size is or what size to step up to. Nor do I know much more about the carbs except they put gas/air into the engine. lol

Your link doesn't want to work for me.i got my jets from a dealer.Any motorcycle shop should have the jets in stock. You may not even need to rejet. You won't know till you install your pods.

Ok so I may or may not replace the airbox with pods. Question is getting the carbs out. Is there an easier way to get them out? Can I loosen both clamps on the front side and slide the tube off the engine in front of the carbs? When I removed the emission stuff I tired to get the carbs out to put the plug in and could not. I was only able to pull the corner of the carb out of that rubber tube. I did push the other end back into the airbox. Is there a trick to getting them out that I am not aware of or are they really just a PITA?

You can loosen both clamps on the front if you want.If you heat the airbox boots with a hair dryer it will make them softer & easier to fold back so you can get the carbs out.

A flamin PITA alright!!! Dude I tried just about all the skin on my knuckles to get the airbox boots to go in, sideways up down! STREWTH!!! They did come out with some assistance from a flat head screwdriver between the carbs and the airbox, and the twin clamps loose in the engine side. But dude what a cadcam design that is!!!

I'm going to try the 130's for my main jet. Do I need to shim my needles as well? Can I get something a local hardware for this?
